Salcombe Distilling Co. is one of the world’s only distilleries accessible by boat. Nestled amongst the traditional boatbuilders on Island Street in Salcombe, Salcombe Distilling Co. carries on the towns rich history of producing outstanding handcrafted products.
Situated on the south coast of England, Salcombe has a strong sailing heritage and co-founders Angus and Howard first met in 1995 whilst working as sailing instructors. Their ritual of a sundowner G&T at Salcombe Yacht Club overlooking the estuary was their preferred way to finish off a day of sailing.
After each having successful careers away from Salcombe, they both found their way back to Devon. Angus had a keen interest in the distillation of spirits and Howard really wanted to build a business in Devon, hence Salcombe Distilling Co was born! Their passion, care, and attention to detail matched with their love of gin and the beautiful coastal town of Salcombe has seen the pair create a host of award-winning spirits.
All of the Salcombe Distilling Co.’s spirits are distilled in their 450ml copper pot still, Provident. The still is named after the beautiful Brixham sailing trawler that was one of the most iconic vessels of Salcombe’s Island Cruising Club. To make sure the spirits are exceptionally smooth and to preserve the delicate flavours of the botanicals, Provident also has a copper side-column to provide maximum copper contact during distillation.
In spirit making, the water makes all the difference. Howard and Angus only use the purest and softest water in England, which they source from the wilds of Dartmoor National Park. Naturally filtered through layers of chalk, this water is so soft it doesn’t need any additional softeners at any stage of the distillation process which results in a spirit that is refreshing yet characteristically smooth.
Salcombe is famous for the Fruiters who used Schooner sailing vessels which were small but extremely fast ships designed to carry the highly perishable cargo of fresh fruits and spices from all over the world. Whilst their fruit and botanicals may now arrive by more modern transport, Howard and Angus use exotic botanicals like Mediterranean citrus peels (red grapefruit, lemon, lime) which were originally carried by the Fruiters.
These Mediterranean citrus flavours are complemented by other hand sourced botanicals such as Macedonian juniper and something closer to home, English coriander seed.
'New London Light' is Salcombe's bold and refreshing non-alcoholic spirit, crafted by their expert distillers to bring innovative flavour combinations into a new era of drinking.
Marking the start of their adventure into the non-alcoholic world, NLL is inspired by their expertise in creating world class London Dry gin. With a complex spectrum of flavour that combines juniper, ginger, orange and sage, NLL opens a door to a new world of taste without alcohol.
They will be launching two new non-alcoholic variants before the end of 2021 so keep an eye out for them on our webstore!
